First of all, you guys did great with the last bonus. Almost 60 of you received a 25 point bonus on your overall grade for participating. We had some visitors comment on your post (Mr. Johnson dropped by), and some great classroom discussion was developed, which in case you didn't know is the point of the entire thing!
So, being true to my word, I am giving you another bonus opportunity. This question is a little more drawn out.....
Our school's archery team has recently won the Alabama State Archery Championship (again!). We are all very proud of the team and their continued success. They practice early and late, and put in more hours than most of the other sports combined. However, the question has been asked by a few students from the other sports, "Is Archery a sport, or is it a hobby?" Now, to be fair, the students who have asked this question have said they are proud of our archery team either way, but I thought I would give everyone a chance to chime in. So here it is........
What makes an activity a sport, and is archery one?
Although I have personally stated to several of our students that I believe archery to be the very definition of a sport, you do not have to agree with me. Answer what is on your mind and what you really think. Remember to be respectful whatever your position is. To get your credit you must answer the entire question. Give examples and use your mind. The best argument can claim victory. The deadline for answers will be next Thursday (March 12). Good luck and may the force be with you!

I think that archery is a SPORT.
Anything that is physical is a SPORT,
such as basketball, soccer, football, ARCHERY, and volleyball. A sport is a activity that you work hard at and try your best. Archery could also be a HOBBY for someone that only likes to do it once on a while but would not want to join a team or group because they are shy or something like that. It may just be a HOBBY for some people and a SPORT for others. I think of it as a SPORT.

I believe archery is a sport 100%. First of all, archery is in the Olympics. It must be important if it was placed in the Olympics. Secondly, Archery is a sport that can build a lot of muscle.( Unlike most of us have) Lastly, Archery is the fastest growing sport in this nation right now. It must be important because millions of people do it.

Archery is a hobby and a sport. How do I know this? I am on the archery team and our team put alot of effort, strength, and teamwork to get first in the state. I consider every sport as a hobby and a hobby can be sport. A sport is supposed to be fun to you and be physically and mentally challenging. Hobbies is doing something that you enjoy. Archery can improve your aim and dexterity which can help in other sports.So, archery is a sport, but it is a hobby to you only if you play it for fun. That is my perspective on archery.

I think archery is both a sport and hobby. The acctual definition of a sport is an atheletic activity requiring skill or physical prowness often in a competitive nature. In archery you have to have skill to aim right, there is physical contact that you use, and you are always competing. However, i think it's contraversal because people say you have to run and exercise and all of that for archery in order for it to be a sport, and you don't have to. They say it's easy, but you have to be really good. I think it's a sport to a certain extent, maybe it's not as hard as football, or baseball, or other more recognized sports, but it's still a sport. I am very proud of the archery team. (:

i really do honestly in my heart think that archery is not just a hobby but a sport and i have at least some reasons why. Archery didn't start off as a sport. It started as a way for a man to hunt and kill food for his family. As time has gone by, people have become competitive in archery. This competitive nature has created a desire for men and women to compete to see who is the best at shooting.
Now, archery is growing in schools, thanks to the hunting channel and state wildlife organizations. The schools that have implemented archery in their classes (over 200 in Alabama alone) have the proper equipment, practice extremely hard, and have that overwhelming desire to become a state or national champion.
Now to answer the question, sport or hobby.
1. Sport- because it is highly competitive and there are thousands of school archery teams just in the U.S. (Not to mention school teams in New Zealand, South Africa, Canada, Australia...)
2. Sport- because it is an activity that works mental and physical discipline, form and technique, stamina, muscle memory, and so on..(Just like football, baseball, gymmnastics, and basketball)
3. Hobby- because you don't have to be highly competitive or on a team to enjoy it.

Just a side note, contrary to popular thought, using major muscle groups and sweating does not make something a sport. What about construction work or exercising at home for fun?

I beleave archery is a sport because u compet in tournaments and u have to have team work. If u dont have team work some 1 could get serioously hurt.I thnk a group of people working 2 gether makes a team and if this team is competing then there playin sum kind of sport so i beleave archery IS a sport.
